Apartments and houses are in general UNfurnished, which means: no kitchen appliances (i.e. refrigerator, microwave) and no carpeting, curtain rods and lights.
Second hand stores ('kringloopwinkels") sell decent second hand furniture for low prices. IKEA is close by in Groningen.
Once you found a residence, don't forget to register at the local town hall.
In rented houses, it is not the tenant's responsibility to insure the fabric of the house, but content insurance (inboedelverzekering) is essential.
Note and check the reading of your meters when you move into your new home. The company responsible for delivery of gas, water and electricity will decide on the monthly advance payment. If it turns out that you use less than what you have paid for during the year, you will receive a refund at the end of the year. However, if you use more, you will be billed accordingly.
KPN is the main telephone company. In order to become connected, you can visit one of their shops called Primafoon.
Tip: They will ask for proof that you are living at the address you give them. (An envelope addressed and sent to you will do). It is also advisable to take your passport and residence permit/proof of application for residency with you.
