On Wednesday 11 April, prof. K. Gaemers, chair of the ASTRON board, will give the starting shot for the contstruction of the new extension to the ASTRON building in Dwingeloo, during a festive ceremony. A new wing is necessary because ASTRON and related organisations have grown out of the current building.
ASTRON together with Staatsbosbeheer, that manages the nature reserve Dwingelderveld in Drenthe where ASTRON is located, have entered into a long-lease contract to build a new wing at the Oude Hoogeveensedijk 4 to the current labs and offices. Building extensions in a National Parc are not easily granted; they have to meet many conditions. Staatsbosbeheer sets a high value upon the permanence of the new wing and a responsible fit in the National Parc.
The new wing will be linked with the existing building. Contractor Van Wijnen Noord BV from Gorredijk will execute the building plans. Besides this, the current building will also be renovated. The new wing is ready by the end of 2012. The whole project will be completed in August 2013.
At the official start of the project, Staatsbosbeheer and ASTRON will sign a letter of content to deepen the cooperation between both organisations. Protection of nature and research to the Universe are thus connected even more.
