ASTRON/JIVE International Summer School 2006

Christian Struve - I am a student at the University of Bonn, where I will finish my master thesis in September under the supervision of Uli Klein. Since already a number of Bonner students benefited from this summer school, I was encouraged to apply as well. And fortunately I was accepted. Together with my supervisors Robert Braun and Tom Oosterloo I reduce Westerboork single-dish data of a 100^2 degree field searching for low column density neutral hydrogen. Since these are very deep observations we are looking for very faint, yet undetected, galaxies and for extended diffuse HI emission regions, possibly around (known) galaxies. Aside from this project work I enjoy the various extra-curricular activities like playing football and bridge or going 'wadloping'. During the Fifa World Cup it was fun watching the games in the guest house together with the other students and guests seeing one of 'our' teams winning.

I am Filomena Volino and I come from the south of Italy. I got my degree in astronomy last December at the University of Bologna. As summer student at JIVE institute I have been working on the cluster CL0024+1654 as gravitational lens of radio galaxies that lie behind it. I reduced VLA data using the astronomical software AIPS. My supervisors were Olaf Wucknitz and Mike Garrett. In my opinion working at JIVE gives you a big chance: day by day you work with big scientist in the Heart of European Astronomy. Aside from learning how to analyse radio data and getting lectures about different astrophysical applications, I enjoyed long bike rides with others summer students in Dwingelderveld National Park and the friendly company of people from JIVE and ASTRON as well. I did the 'wadloping', a really interesting walk trough the sea, and spent some days in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Groningen.

My name is Ana Cabral and I come from Porto (Portugal). I'm currently studying in the 'Faculdade de Ciencias da Universidade do Porto' where I will finish my first degree in Astronomy by the upcoming spring (2007). My career aims are to get a PhD after finishing my first degree and then start working in some kind of research project. As a summer student in JIVE, I have been working with Lisa Harvey-Smith and Rebeca Soria doing some spectral analysis in order to study masers, which are very compact sources with bright and narrow spectral lines (I'm studying more specifically methanol masers, in the surroundings of sites of massive star formation). This study will provide information about the physics, chemistry, magnetic fields and kinematics of the massive star forming region in question. Aside from all the work, we still have a lot of free time, in which we play some football and bridge, we have some great bike rides through the surroundings and we have met some of the cities of The Netherlands, such as Groningen, Amsterdam and Utrecht. This has been a great experience and most of it due to the relationships created and the warm welcoming received from the ASTRON and JIVE staff.

Dana Vicas - Originary from Romania, I recently graduated from the astronomy department of Nanjing University(China). When I applied for this
internship I did not dare to dream that I will get it. But here I am today! I a currently working on a project on Polar ring Galaxies along with my two
supervisors James Anderson and Roy Subhashis, to whom I am deeply grateful to have had started me on the road to Radioastronomy. My project involves usin Aips to analyze HI data, image galaxies and try to decide whether they are or not polar ring galaxies.
Life here is complete, at least it so seems to me. After five when the work day ends there is always something else than astronomy to do, some
social event to attend. Yet, my favourite of all is enjoying the stillness of this place and the magic of the starry nights.)

My name is Maciej Serylak and I am from Poland. I have finished my diploma in physics at the University of Zielona Gora. This year I was one of the ASTRON summer students. My supervisor was Ben Stappers. My work during this summer was analysing multifrequency observations of pulsars. Therefore I wrote software which could handle and analyse EPN pulsar data. The scientific aim was to compute the correlation coefficents between pulsar data observed at different frequencies. Aside from learning new programming languages and dealing with radio data there were a lot of great social activities. We were watching 2006 FIFA world cup, besides watching we were playing football in nearby Lhee almost every week, we took a trip to Amsterdam and Utrecht, did a 'wadloping' to Ameland, went to the beach, cycled through Nationaal Park Dwingelderveld and to the nearby cities, learned how to play bridge at Jan and Johanna Noordam house and had a great parties. I found people from ASTRON nad JIVE very friendly and sociable during parties or common trips to cinemas in Hoogeveen or Groningen.
