100 Hours of Astronomy

Submitter: Zsolt Paragi
Description: Today starts the "100 Hours of Astronomy" (see http://www.100hoursofastronomy.org/ ), a project in the context of the International Year of Astronomy. This is a global astronomy event from 2 to 5 April in which various observatories all around the world organise free public activities. In particular Astron and JIVE will join "Around the World in 80 Telescopes", a unique live 24-hour webcast that follows night and day around the globe to some of the most advanced observatories both on and off the planet. During the day and on Sunday radio telescopes from Australia, Asia, Europe, North America and South America will carry out e-VLBI observations of a powerful radio galaxy. The data will be correlated at JIVE in real time, and this will be shown on the fly at http://iya.expres-eu.org/ , where the e-VLBI technique is introduced as well.

ASTRON and JIVE also participate in a big public event in NEMO, Amsterdam, on Saturday and Sunday 4 and 5 April. During this weekend, an astronomy festival called "Be seduced by the Stars", takes place. At this event, mainly aimed at children and families, everyone can take part in all kinds of interactive activities, such as ASTRON's Electrolab, where children can put together their own electronic package. ASTRON will also play live pulsar sounds, and people can classify objects in the Universe themselves with help of Hanny van Arkel, a famous school teacher and amateur astronomer. e-VLBI will feature in one of the public talks.
