G. CAMRAS

(C.A. Muller Radio Astronomy Station - the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope)

Start is at 1 p.m. In a luxury coach you head for the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope in Drenthe. The 25 meter radio telescope is located close to ASTRON's main headquarters in the National park "Dwingelderveld". When the telescope was opened in 1956 it was the largest radio telescope in the world. In the late 20th century ASTRON put the telescope out of use. The telescope played an important role in international research on the Sun and in mapping the neutral hydrogen in the Galaxy. Since 2009 the telescope is listed as a national monument. CAMRAS is founded in 2007. The name is in honor of professor C.A. Muller (PA0CAM) who was the first director of SRZM, the predecessor of ASTRON. CAMRAS is a group of volunteers with radio amateurs, amateur astronomers and technicians. Their goals are the conservation and restoration of the Dwingeloo radio telescope, to make it usable for amateur astronomers, radio amateurs and education, and to stimulate the interests of youngsters in science and technology. At present the telescope can be used for astronomy observations for instance pulsars and for HAM-radio experiments such as Moon bouncing. End of excursion: approx. 3.30 p.m. Costs per person € 10,- with a minimum of 5 participants.
