3C147 Calibration Tutorial

For release 1.2 and up

An updated version of the tutorial showing off the new R1.2 functionality including the use of Tigger and friends can be found here: http://www.astron.nl/meqwiki-data/users/oms/3C147-Tutorial1.2-purrlog/

Note that this includes links to all required files. For older releases, read on.

NB: this tutorial was originally made with a pre-release version of 1.2, so minor discrepancies w.r.t. the release version may still be present in the screen shots, etc. Let me know (osmirnov AT gmail.com) if you spot anything glaring.

For release 1.1 and 1.1.1

The original tutorial was produced with MeqTrees release 1. With releases 1.1 and 1.1.1, some TDL options have changed, and it is no longer possible to follow the instructions of the tutorial literally. TonyWillis and EmanuelaOrru have kindly recreated the steps necessary to do the same operations with MeqTrees 1.1.1, and contributed their purrlogs here.

Tony's contribution: This variant of the tutorial http://www.astron.nl/meqwiki-data/users/agw/3C147_preflagged_purrlog uses the preflagged version of the 3C147 data set and shows GUIs for the MeqTrees 1.1.1 release. The original version of the tutorial has more detailed explanations of what's being done to the data but corresponding sections of this later tutorial should be looked at to check if data entry specifications have changed etc.

Emanuela's contribution: A different approach of correction for differential errors could be found in the following purrlog: http://www.astron.nl/meqwiki-data/users/eorru/purrlog_manu

For release 1.0

For starters, you will need to download a measurement set. If you have a working aips++ installation, use this MS:

* http://www.astron.nl/meqwiki-data/users/oms/3C147-Calibration-Tutorial/3C147_spw0.MS.tgz

People without aips++ can still do all of the calibration, except for running the autoflag tool. This tool is required to eliminate RFI; if you don't have aips++, use a "pre-flagged" MS instead, and skip the flagging steps of the tutorial:

* http://www.astron.nl/meqwiki-data/users/oms/3C147-Calibration-Tutorial/3C147_spw0_preflagged.MS.tgz

Also, download a sky model from here:

* http://www.astron.nl/meqwiki-data/users/oms/3C147-Calibration-Tutorial/3C147.MDL.

Then, start reading the tutorial itself. (Note that the tutorial was produced within a day by using PURR. You should learn to use PURR yourself as you calibrate!)
