:: Mission background

MIRI is one of the four instruments (FGS, NIRCAM, Nirspec, Miri) consituting the payload of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The JWST is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope scheduled for launch in August, 2011 . JWST is designed to study the earliest galaxies and some of the first stars formed after the Big Bang. These early objects have a high redshift from our vantage-point, meaning that the best observations for these objects are available in the infrared. JWST's instruments will be designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum.
