- ASTRON was founded in 1949. In 1999 ASTRON celebrated its 50th anniversary. Two conferences were organised on that occasion: one on astronomical applications for the next generation of radio telescopes, and a second that concentrated on the technical questions involved in the design and development of the instrument.
