The radio frequency signals from each LBA dipole or each HBA tile polarization enter into separate receiver units in the LOFAR electronics container. Each receiver unit has three inputs. For International stations, one input is connected to an HBA tile for one polarization (the high-band input), and one input is connected to a single dipole polarization of an LBA antenna (the low-band high input), and one input is left free (the low-band low input, intended for future upgrade). For the Dutch stations, one input is connected to an HBA tile for one polarization (the high-band input), and the two low-band inputs are connected to two different LBA antennas (the Dutch stations have twice as many LBA dipoles as HBA tiles, but only half of the dipoles can be used at any given time).
The receiver units select one of the three inputs. In principle, each receiver unit can be individually controlled as to which input is used, but in practice the normal observing modes select the same antenna input type for all receiver units.
