Postdoctoral Position, High Angular Resolution Radio Astronomy - ASTRON (Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy)

Deadline: 2nd July, 2012

The Astronomy Group at ASTRON (Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy) is offering a postdoctoral research position in the field of high angular resolution radio astronomy. The ideal candidate will have radio interferometry experience and a passion for technical development which complements their science interests. A demonstrated competence in scientific programming will be highly valued. The focus of the position is on enabling and carrying out cutting-edge science with current and upcoming long baseline radio interferometers, using (for example) low-frequency, wide-field, and/or astrometric observations. In addition to pursuing this main theme, the successful applicant will have substantial scope for additional personal research directions.

ASTRON operates the LOFAR and Westerbork radio telescopes and hosts the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE), which operates the European VLBI Network (EVN). In addition, ASTRON hosts a vibrant R&D division and is a leading participant in the planning and development of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Research proposals aligned with these facilities are encouraged.

ASTRON is located in Dwingeloo, in the north of the Netherlands. For more information on ASTRON itself see http://www.astron.nl.

Postdoctoral researchers at ASTRON have access to excellent computational facilities and travel support. Collaboration is encouraged with the nearby Dutch university astronomy departments.

The appointment is initially for two years and may be renewed for a third year, based on budget and performance.

Letters of application (including a CV & research plan), plus 3 letters of reference should be sent to personnel [at] astron [dot] nl (or by mail to: HR Department ASTRON, P.O. Box 2, 7990 AA Dwingeloo, The Netherlands) before the deadline - July 2nd, 2012. We will begin considering applications immediately after this date, though the position will remain open and applications will continue to be accepted until a suitable candidate is found. E-mail submission of all material is encouraged.

The successful applicant will be in the formal employ of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), at a salary scale commensurate with age and experience. Relocation expenses and assistance with finding accommodation will be provided.
