The fast survey speed of ASKAP makes it an ideal instrument to perform large HI surveys and better understand the role hydrogen gas plays in the formation and evolution of galaxies. I will discuss some of the extra-galactic HI surveys currently proposed for ASKAP, with a particular emphasis on DINGO, a deep HI survey studying the gas content of the universe $0\leq z \leq 1$.
