Saltcoats Pub Crawl Here is my recipe for a good pub crawl around Saltcoats. Begin early, with an 11.00am pint (ask for "heavy") at the "Windy Ha", come to think of it make it 2 pints - its so cheery in there (esp during the festive season). Then dawdle down the road into Dockhead steet, have a pint in the "Albion bar". It's time to think about lunch so perhaps you can get a taxi at the post office round to the "Bay Hotel" (at the seaside). Don't divert to the "Crown Inn" - this comes later. In "the Bay" choose the Gammon Steak and Pineapple, with peas & Chips (or alternatively the Prawn Salad if you are feeling health concious at this stage), washed down of course by another pint. It's now mid-afternoon so its time to dawdle along the sea front in order to get your "second wind". The "Stanley Hotel" is your first port of call coming up around 10 mins after you leave the Bay (walk in the direction of Ardrossan NOT Stevenston). If its summertime and the weather is good you can sit out and admire the view. Be careful, time passes at a very accelerated rate now. After a few pints you might consider high tea at the Ingledene or Lauriston (this very much depends on your strength of constitution). A better option is to have a pint in the Lauriston bar and saunter back to the "Bay" for some decent fare. Now its time to head back to Dockhead street via the "Castleweerock" and then the "Crown Inn". Settle in the Crown for at least 2 pints. By this time you may feel the need to visit another old haunt of your late youth - perhaps "Sulivans" for example, resist the temptation. At this stage the reception you receive may be variable... consider returning to the Windy Ha. If anyone gets this far let me know! Mike Garrett (garrett@jive.nl)
