I am senior staff astronomer at ASTRON and Head of the Astronomy Group. I am also professor of astronomy at the Kapteyn Institute in Groningen. Here is my CV.

My research: HI in early-type and radio galaxies
- Gas in the nuclear region of (radio loud) AGN. Using HI to trace outflow, feeding of theAGN and circumnuc lear disks
- Gas-rich mergers and radio galaxies: relation with radio morphology?
- Centaurus A - detailed study of the HI in this nearby radio galaxy
- Neutral hydrogen in early-type galaxies - connectionto formation and evolution of these galaxies (Sauron sample, ATLAS3D, HIPASS sample)
See a summary of the recent results:
- Review on Centaurus A: The Many Faces of the Gas in Centaurus A (NGC 5128)
- Early-type galaxies in different environments: an HI view
- Cold gas in massive early-type galaxies: The case
of NGC 1167 - Is cold gas fuelling the radio galaxy NGC 315?
- Paper on HI in a candidate binary black hole
HI absorption in radio galaxies: fast nuclear outflows
Neutral hydrogen around early-type galaxies: relicts of their formation?
My research: Deep Fields
I am part of the LOFAR Survey Core Team. My main interest is evolution of radio galaxies and cyclical activity. In particular I study the very early phase - very young radio sources (CSS/GPS) - and old relics.
- see the summary of some recent results on deep fields
- study the spectral properties of the AGN at sub-mJy radio flux, in order to disentangle different accretion regimes (see paper The AGN component in deep radio fields: Results from the First Look Survey - Prandoni, Morganti & Mignano)
Life-cycle of radio sources - Aleksandar Shuvelski (Kapteyn/ASTRON)
Neutral hydrogen and radio sources: a large absorption survey - Katinka Gereb (Kapteyn/ASTRON)
The AGN component in deep radio fields: a LOFAR perspective - Gabriele Guglielmino (INAF Bologna/ASTRON)
Past PhD students:
The role of neutral hydrogen in the evolution of nearby radio galaxies - Christian Struve (Kapteyn Institute /ASTRON)
One night I was, as usual, observing the sky with my telescope. I noticed that a sign was hanging from a galaxy a hundred milion light-years away. On it was written: I SAW YOU.
