General information

The European Union aims to achieve a common European Research Area (ERA) to achieve H2020’s goals of excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges. Big Science projects form an important contribution to these goals, not only through their intrinsically challenging scientific goals, but also through their capabilities to foster innovation and last but not least by bringing people from many European countries together. Aligning the strategic agendas on the national and European level is important.

The NWO-Institutes ASTRON and Nikhef, seek to showcase the potential of the connecting strength of Big Science projects, in cooperation with the H2020 sponsored project ASTERICS and the ATTRACT initiative.

Dr. Markus Nordberg (CERN) will introduce ATTRACT, a new, open, pan-EU initiative to accelerate the development of high-performance detector and imaging technologies for market - through a process of co-innovation among European research institutes, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), companies and universities.

ASTRON and Nikhef will present a set of examples of exciting big science in astronomy and (astro) particle physics, the need to collaborate in well connected teams and the often unexpected connections to companies and society.

In a market setting other projects and opportunities for collaboration in new project and initiatives will be presented and of course there is plenty of time for interaction and networking.
