The background picture showing the night skyline of Groningen is courtesy of Rense Boomsma and Erwin Platen. The sky above Groningen is populated with total-HI images taken from the WHISP survey (Westerbork observations of neutral Hydrogen in Irregular and SPiral galaxies ). WHISP data are publicly available. The only total HI image not taken form WHISP is that of the large, grand-design spiral NGC 6946, taken from Boomsma et al. 2008, A&A, 490, 555.
