Public transportation in the Netherlands and Amsterdam

From Amsterdam Schiphol airport, you should take the train to ‘Amsterdam Centraal’ (Amsterdam central station) to reach Amsterdam city centre.
Website of the Dutch trains in English language: http://www.ns.nl/en/travellers/home
See http://www.9292.nl to plan your trip using public transport in the Netherlands (also in English). This travel advice includes bus, train, tram, metro.

Public transportation in Amsterdam is very good. Buses and trams are mainly run by the ‘Gemeentelijk Vervoersbedrijf’ called GVB.
GVB sells one-hour disposable chipcards on trams and buses - the price is € 2,80. This card is valid for one hour after check-in to public transportation.

More information: http://en.gvb.nl/service_en_verkoop/reisproducten/Pages/Wegwerpkaartje.aspx
You can also buy a ticket for one or multiple days. More information:
http://en.gvb.nl/service_en_verkoop/reisproducten/Pages/Dagkaarten.aspx
The cards are only valid on GVB buses, trams and metros.
For general information about GVB tickets, see http://en.gvb.nl/service_en_verkoop/reisproducten/Pages/Reisproducten.aspx

Important:
Validity of cards - check-in and check-out
You have to check in and out at the machines in bus/tram/metro. The card becomes valid on the first check in. Within the validity period of the ticket, there is no limit to the transfers you can make between GVB routes. However, you must still check out (when you disembark) and check in (when you embark) or the card will stop working. After the time period expires, the card can no longer be used.
The GVB one-hour card is not valid on the GVB night buses.
