Second Workshop on

3rd Generation Calibration

in Radio Astronomy

Portugal, 18-30 Sept 2011

Accommodation

The venue may be inspected here. It is a 5 star resort with a large area, filled with palm trees, containing two hotels and several apartment complexes. There is a nice beach nearby and also a natural reserve that people can walk/run/bike around. Attractions of the place should certainly be an incentive to be on the participants list!

Workshop participants will stay in one apartment block, so they can easily network. There are several swimming pools in front, gardens, health club, etc. They will walk (5 min) to the main hotel for breakfast, conference room, lunch and coffee breaks. The conference room has access to a garden/pool where lunch will be served. Please note that internet access is only provided in the hotels, not the apartments.

Apartments have 2 individual bedrooms and 2 private bathrooms (one in one of the bedrooms, other just outside the bedroom). There are a few one-bedroom apartments available for people that don't want to share. The apartments are nice, with a large balcony, living room and very well-furbished kitchen (there is a supermarket quite close for those who want to cook dinner).

Further information about organized group travels during the weekend and other attractions will be provided as we get closer to the workshop start date.

The price is very reasonable: 62 euros per person per night for a 2-bedroom shared apartment. Prices include breakfast, lunch (with drinks, except wine), access to health club, several swimming pools (including one inside the hotel) and internet access (in hotel/conference room). Some financial aid is available to participants. People requesting funding support should contact the LOC as soon as possible (email at end of page). Note that there is no registration fee.

To book, please fill out the following form: pdf / doc and send it to the travel agency. For further information please contact the LOC.

Please note that the deadline for booking the hotel is July 1st, and that a deposit of 30% is required: see the booking form for details. The booking conditions are rather strict, but please remember that we are getting a very good price on a rather luxurious hotel.

Travel

The easiest way will be to fly to Faro international airport (in Algarve):
Probably there aren't direct flights from outside Europe but you can fly to somewhere in Europe (e.g. London) and then connect to Faro if needed. You should take a taxi from the airport to the hotel (around 50 Km, ~ 40 minutes). Minivans will be available at the time for group travel - more information will be provided closer to the workshop start date.

Note that a cheaper (and sometimes faster) way would be to fly to Lisbon and then take the train or bus to the venue. When making your travel arrangements please note that the closest "main city" to the venue is Albufeira (~ 10 Km/17 min. to the hotel). A quick option might be to take the EVA bus from Lisbon directly to Albufeira. You can check the timetable here or take a look at the web site: http://www.eva-bus.com for more info (you can also check the competition: http://www.rede-expressos.pt - some of the buses have wifi).
For the train please see: http://www.cp.pt - you should take the one from Lisbon to Albufeira/Faro (check the timetable here - second page).

Once we know everyone's travel plans we will try to find a "group solution" for traveling from Faro or Albufeira to the hotel.
