The Challenges of the Upcoming HI Surveys

Venue

The workshop will take place at ASTRON in Dwingeloo, Netherlands.

Dwingeloo is in the north-east of the Netherlands, and can be reached in about 20 min. by either private car or taxi from Hoogeveen, the nearest bigger city on the main motorway A28 and railway line from Amsterdam Schiphol airport.

 

Travelling to ASTRON by train
Trains to Hoogeveen leave the airport every hour at 33 min. past the hour to arrive in Hoogeveen a little bit less than two hours later at 25 min. past the hour, as well as at 3 minutes past the hour to arrive in Hoogeveen at 55 minutes past the hour.
There is no longer a direct train connection between Schiphol and Hoogeveen and the route of the train has changed: it will no longer run via ‘Amersfoort’, but via ‘Almere’ and ‘Lelystad’, so don't panic if you find yourself in an unfamiliar part of the country and enjoy the view.

Two options:
1) If you take the train of 3 minutes past the hour from Schiphol, you have to switch trains in ‘Zwolle’. Note that the arrival and departure platforms in Zwolle are not close to each other; however there is sufficient time for the transfer.
2) If you take the train of 33 minutes past the hour from Schiphol, you may prefer to switch trains in ‘Meppel’. This is the connection you get by filling in ‘via station’ Meppel at the website. You can leave the train in Meppel and at the same platform wait for the next train to arrive (direction Groningen).

 

Return trains leave from Hoogeveen at 4 and 34 minutes after the hour. If you take the train at 4 minutes past the hour, you have to change trains in Zwolle, whereas the 34 minutes past the hour train has the same convenient transfer in Meppel as the trip from Schiphol.

 

When buying the train ticket at Schiphol to travel to Hoogeveen, it is wise to also buy the return ticket from Hoogeveen to Schiphol already when you are at Schiphol on your way to ASTRON (buy it as a separate ticket and make sure to buy a ticket without date for the return trip). The ticket machine in Hoogeveen does not accept creditcards!
We can arrange for taxis (or private shuttle buses at peak travel times) to travel from/to Hoogeveen to/from ASTRON. For that purpose please fill in your time of arrival in Hoogeveen and departure from ASTRON/hotel in the registration form.

 

Traveling to Dwingeloo by car

Exit highway A28 using exit 29 for Spier, Dwingeloo and Wijster. Take direction Dwingeloo. After about 5 kilometers, turn left at the sign 'Lhee 1'. After entering "Lhee" take the second way to the left. Follow this way. The institute is located in the woods, at about a kilometer distance from your last turn. The ASTRON Institute is surrounded by a restricted access zone. Visitors are advised to park their cars outside the zone (and walk to our buildings), or to announce their arrival in advance (call the institute reception at 0521-595 100 during office hours) because we'll need to know your car's license number. Failure to follow these procedures may result in a fine (although nobody remembers the last time that happened...).

 

 

Accommodation

We made a block booking of rooms at Hotel de Börken, Lhee 76, 7991 PJ Dwingeloo. The block reservation will expire on Jan 31, 2014; after expiry reservations are on the basis of availability.
