The Dwingeloo Telescope - a top monument

Submitter: Mark Bentum
Description: The Dwingeloo Telescope, one of the Top100 monuments in the Netherlands in the period 1940-1958

Last Monday, October 15, Minister Plasterk of Education, Culture and Science, announced the list of 100 top monuments in the reconstruction period 1940-1958. The Dwingeloo telescope is one of the important monuments of that period. With this status, funding for the maintenance is possible. Of course the status also means that reconstruction must be done in close collaboration with the RACM (Rijkdienst voor Archeologie, Cultuurlandschap en Monumenten).

Getting the telescope on the list was the work of many people, mainly within ASTRON and CAMRAS. CAMRAS is the foundation to bring the Dwingeloo Telescope back in its second life and, of course, the status of top monument was an important step.

Many CAMRAS’ers were present at the official announcement in Amersfoort and were able to talk to minister Plasterk about the Dwingeloo Telescope. (The person in the centre of the botton picture is obviously important too, but has not been identified yet).

The complete list can be found at the RACM website: www.racm.nl
