The WSRT gives an HI perspective on galaxies 2.5 billion years ago

Submitter: Raffaella Morganti
Description: On the 21st of March, Avanti Gogate successfully defended her PhD thesis at the University of Groningen. Avanti was supervised by Prof. Marc Verheijen and Prof. Thijs van der Hulst. Her thesis, based on more than 1000h of WSRT observations, follows the best tradition of HI work from the Kapteyn institute!

The thesis, titled "An HI perspective on galaxies 2.5 billion years ago", presents a very detailed study of the presence and properties of atomic neutral hydrogen in 166 galaxies detected and imaged, using WSRT observations, in two pencil-beam volumes each containing a galaxy cluster at redshift ~0.2.

This is a relatively high redshift for the detection of HI in emission and only a few studies have been done for galaxies so distant, and even then mostly by studying only single objects. The SKA pathfinders, and later the SKA, promise to explore HI at even larger cosmological distances, but their results are still to come.

It is therefore great to see the results presented in this thesis and how the WSRT observations have made it possible. This is going to be a reference study for quite some time to come! Congratulations Avanti!
