| Description: | Around 1980, when the majority still lived close to Dwingeloo, people from the Sterrewacht participated much more in local clubs and activities. For instance, the Dwingeloo tennis club was chaired by Wout Beerenkamp, while I ran the Technical Committee with Hans van Someren Greve. The Youth Committee was chaired by our present Dutch teacher Henny Zanting, assisted by Arnold van Ardenne. On top of that, many more Sterrewachters filled the competition teams that took on other villages for eternal glory.
The image shows a subset recuperating after such a match at our place. Sadly, two of them are deceased: Hannie van Ardenne (far left) and Vijay Kapahi (far right). The latter was one of our first postdocs, and went on to become the Director of the GMRT in India. Also visible are John and Alison O'Sullivan, and Jan and Johanna Noordam. We all looked disgustingly young. |
