Comet Hale-Bopp at twilight, photographed from Dwingeloo, April 1997

Submitter: Richard Porcas
Description: Comet Hale-Bopp holds the record for being the comet visible to the naked eye for the longest time (18 months). It was discovered in July 1995 and passed perihelion on 1 April 1997. This photograph was taken just 10 days later on 11 April, with the Dwingeloo telescope (built 1956) in the foreground. Note the Pleiades shining through at the top of the telescope structure.
