X marks the spot

Submitter: Raffaella Morganti
Description: Image of a radio galaxy obtained with the WSRT. The galaxy was selected from
the Sloan Digital Survey to investigate the presence of gas in this kind of
object. The radio structure that you see in this image is caused by jets of
plasma shot into space by the black hole in the nucleus of this galaxy. The
gas (that we are looking for) could provide the fuel for this black hole to
make such jets. The X-shaped structure could indicate that until recently
there were in fact TWO black holes in this galaxy. The image has been made
automatically by the WSRT pipeline.
