Description: | In the year that the Dwingeloo 25 m telescope celebrates its golden anniversary, we can also look back on 55 years of 21 cm line observations. It was in March of 1951 that Ewen and Purcell first detected the line, followed some six weeks later by Muller and Oort. The results of both groups were published in the 1 September 1951 issue of Nature (with a brief message from Pawsey that the line had also been detected in Australia).
Muller and Oort included a figure showing the line intensity as a function of location, for several scans crossing the galactic plane (see graph). |
