The FAST 30 m demonstrator

Submitter: Richard Strom
Description: The FAST (Five-hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope) is a Chinese project to build a telescope of 500 m diameter (~300 m illuminated). ASTRON has assisted its colleagues in Beijing through a Chinese Academy of Sciences - Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences bilateral agreement, enabling exchange of personnel for over 10 years. The photograph shows a pilot version of FAST, with a 30 m active surface (1), steerable L-band focal package (2), with which the 21 cm HI line was observed (3).
