LOFAR backbone broken

Submitter: Teun Grit & Mark Bentum
Description: On Wednesday November 1st, the backbone of LOFAR was broken due to constructions along the A28 highway. All 144 fibers had to be welded on two places after which we could measure the characteristics of the 65 kilometer fiber connection again. At 2 o’clock in the night one of the two splice trays burst open. Fortunately no fibers were broken and after two hours the OTDR measurements could be started. Six technicians of Volker Wessels have been working on this for almost 24 hours in two muddy holes in the cold and partly in the dark. Friday morning at around 7 o’clock the work was completed and the LOFAR CS1 tests could be continued.
