5-axis milling machine

| Description: | The mechanical prototype group introduced in November a new 5-axis milling machine to replace the 6 year old 5-axis milling machine. The 'new' machine (factory demo-model, age 1.5 year) matches the future requirements for production of large, accurate units and accurate milling of complete sets of parts. Also a step into more integrating the mechanical and optical production can be served. The machine order had a strict specification on the production quality requirement, this to prevent for any quality or reliability issues, as what we experienced with the previous machine. From day 1, after release, the production started. The first part was a polishing mould for the optical production of a Xshooter mirror. Several parts are made already like 4 big units for Xshooter testplatform. The ‘old’ machine will be in production till April 2007 to serve JWST-MIRI on the flight model production and then be sold. |
