Time as perceived by Wubbo Ockels

Submitter: Hayley Bignall
Description: It is well known that the Earth environment, and especially its gravitation, strongly influences human perception. Therefore it is a highly liberating experience to make a trip to Outer Space. Especially so for Mission Scientists, who are not selected on lack of imagination. Dr Wubbo Ockels, the first Dutch astronaut (in 1985), is one of those fortunate people. As a result he has, after 20 years of reflection, developed the intriguing theory that our perception of time is somehow caused by the fact that we are constrained by Earth gravity. The picture, which was captured from a streaming digital recording, shows him expounding before a packed audience in Dwingeloo recently, which was followed by a lively discussion.
Dr Ockels is the first to admit that his theory is not complete, and he actively sollicited counter arguments (which he then easily buried). We should be grateful to those who are willing and able to risk their Hero status to point our thinking into new directions.
