Code Reuse Happens (sometimes)

Submitter: Tony Willis
Description: The Collections Plotter is a recent addition to the MeqTrees visualization arsenal. As the name suggests, the plotter can collect data from many different sources and display the data in combination. In our example we show the summed channel visibility data (so a continuum plot) of a WSRT observation of the 3C343 region of the sky. Sixty four records are shown per tabbed page, so our display just shows the first of two pages.
The animation blinks back and forth between showing the observation with flagged data hidden, and then shown. Although this particular display shows visibility data, the plotter is equally effective for showing such things as antenna phase and gain as a function of time. It plays a prominent role in many of the demos being shown at the current MeqTrees workshop.

This plotter has an interesting history. It started out as a real-time display coded in C++ for the James Clerk Maxwell telescope's ASCIS/HARP heterodyne array system. Translation into Python took only a few days work, and included about 40 percent reduction in the amount of code required. After some fine tuning, it has now become an integral part of the MeqTrees system.
