Description: | The first international LOFAR station in Effelsberg Germany has seen “first light" at the gathering of the German Long Wavelength consortium (GLOW) on 21 march 2007. The participants of this consortium are German astronomy institutes and universities. Their goal is to build 12 LOFAR stations in Germany in the coming years. The Max-Planck-Institute for Radioastronomy has the honour to use the first international station! The next two stations are planned in Garching (Munich) and Potsdam (Berlin). A demonstration and explanation of the station was given by Menno Norden and Stefan Wijnholds. With only 8 antennas it was possible to make a nice image of the entire sky. The remaining 88 antennas are still waiting for the new Remote Station Processing (RSP) hardware. During this summer the high speed data connection between Effelsberg and Groningen will become available. Then the first experiments with a baseline of 350 km will be possible. Other European countries like Great-Brittan, France, Italy, Poland and Sweden have also shown their interest in having LOFAR stations. |
