The shadow of a mountain

Submitter: Rob Millenaar
Description: A side benefit of spending long nights on a mountain observing is having a chance to witness the sunset or sunrise in a way that not many people will ever see. The exceptionally clear air and unobstructed views make for a breathtaking experience.
The sunset or sunrise as seen from Mauna Kea adds a special phenomenon to the show, because the single large mountain casts a very distinct shadow of itself on the atmosphere opposite the sun. This shadow could easily be mistaken for just another mountain, as in this picture that was taken at sunrise from the very summit of Mauna Kea. With the rising sun at my back, the shadow gradually gets lower and less distinct as the sun starts to warm my neck.
The JCMT can be seen just below and left of the peak of the shadow-mountain, while the Subaru and Keck telescope domes start catching the first rays of sunlight.
