MIDIR high-resolution spectrometer for the mid-infrared

Submitter: Ton Schoenmaker
Description: As preparation for the instrumentation of the 42 meter European Extremely Large Telescope (see AJDI 13 Feb 2007), the optical and mechanical group of ASTRON participated in the conceptual design study of MIDIR - the MID-InfraRed instrument for the E-ELT. Part of the work done at ASTRON was the optical design of a high-resolution spectrometer with a spectral resolution of about 50000 (~6 km/s). The figure shows the layout from the 52 mm long exit slit of the Integral Field Unit (IFU) to the 2048x2048 pixels detector. Order selection for the main- dispersion echelle is done by the cross-dispersion grating. Both dispersive elements have their own type of Three-Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) for optimal matching of the pupils. Typical dimensions are 1.2 x 1.0 x 0.6 meter.
