Description: | 120 astronomers from 15 nations followed the invitation to participate in the first international scientific LOFAR workshop, held from 23.-27. April in Emmen, located some 20 km from the core of the array. The program of the workshop encompassed a wide range of scientific projects that can be carried out with LOFAR: detection of signals from neutral hydrogen from the Epoch of Reionization, studies of distant radio galaxies, variable and transient radio sources and radio emission caused by cosmic ray particles and our Sun. Another part of the program was a visit to the core the LOFAR array: standing eye to eye with installed hardware proved to be an exiting experience for everyone. Whether the scientific topics or the social program will be remembered remains to be seen; clearly the football matches and the bowling tournament will stay in everyone's memory for quite a while. |
