Last trip of VLBI tapes

Submitter: Jan Buiter
Description: The picture shows the last trip of the Magnetic Tapes that JIVE once used for the collection of VLBI data. These tapes were sent to Dwingeloo for processing, from radio telescopes all over the world, by DHL and Union Transport.
Since the VLBI data transport is now done with Hard Disks or optical fibres, the tapes have become redundant. Their only valuable part is now the aluminium center part of the tape reel. For 500 tapes this is a total of about 200 kg of Aluminium. The recycling company bought the tapes to collect the Aluminium.
