MIRI Verification Model Integration

Submitter: Michael Meijers
Description: This image shows the intermediate results of the assembly of the JWST Mid Infrared Instrument verification model. One of its main elements are the Spectrometer Main Optics boxes, built and delivered by ASTRON and shown on the left and right of this picture. In the middle the Spectrometer Pre Optics can be found, built by our partner institute ATC in Edinburgh. The funny-sized cups on top of the SPO are light traps that capture the complete zero-order of the gratings (also delivered by ASTRON) which is not used in the instrument (only the 1st order of the grating is used for science purposes). The SPO and the SMO are connected by the deck (the element below the SPO and SMO), built and delivered by the University of Leicester. After many paper and model checks this proves that everything fits together perfectly on a 10 micron level: congrats to the MIRI-team! The assembly will be finished by adding the imager part of the instrument, built and delivered by our French partner CEA from Saclay and the input optics from our partners in Belgium (CSL-Liege) and Switzerland (PSI-Zurich). The complete structure will be attached to the James Webb Space Telescope by carbon fiber struts built by DSRI in Copenhagen.
