Peeling the A-team

Submitter: Sarod Yatawatta
Description: This is a series of images showing the LOFAR CS1 calibration/imaging pipeline at work. All images show the full hemisphere centered on the north celestial pole (NCP).

The raw image ("observed") is severely affected by phase drifts. After taking out this "uv-plane effect", the calibrated image is dominated by the two strongest sources in the sky, i.e., CasA (top) and CygA (left). After "peeling off" these two sources, the residual image reveals a few hundred fainter 3C and 4C (and some other) sources. The brightest is Tycho (top centre). The image may be improved further by peeling it off, and also the remaining A-Team sources, i.e. Taurus A (right) and Virgo A (bottom).

The observation used only 16 single-dipole stations, with the phase centre pointed at the NCP. The total duration of the observation was 48 hours. About 20 subbands, each with a bandwidth about 0.14MHz were used to make this image.
