One working LOFAR HBA tile!

Submitter: Michiel Brentjens
Description: On wednesday November 21, the first successful all-sky image with a LOFAR High Band Antenna (HBA) tile was made. The image was recorded at 15:25 MET and has a resolution of about 30 degrees FWHM. The left panel is the map constructed by scanning the HBA tile beam across the sky, integrating for one second per position. The bandwidth is 195 khz at a frequency of approximately 140 MHz. The right panel shows an all-sky map at approximately the same scale, but a slightly different projection. The Milky way is indicated by the fuzzy white streak. It is clearly detected, at the correct position and orientation, in the HBA image. Cyg A and Cas A are invisible in the map because their flux is dwarfed by the Galactic emission surrounding them. The bright point at the northern horizon may be RFI, or perhaps a grating response of the Galactic centre.
