Cabaret!

Submitter: Madroon E.J.
Description: The strangest things happened at the recent good-bye reception for some local manager. He was a rather scruffy fellow in a brown jacket, who seemed to have been there for a long time. Clearly not a high flyer, because we wear blue jackets.

The proceedings were constantly interrupted by his very ill-mannered family members, who looked remarkably like him. Inbreeding, I suppose. He himself kept on talking about black holes, which is to be expected from an astronomer. But at some point I realised that he was really talking about money, the finer points of which astronomers know very little of.

To my surprise, the Minister was there also, which seems too much honor for somebody outside Den Haag. She looked ravishing and sexy, but appeared to be a little drunk, and said all kinds of lewd things. Worse, she pinned a totally excessive decoration on the wrong person. This was someone in a dark suit who had been sitting to one side, and had been laughing like a hyena for some time.

After some fumbling by the bearded yokel who announced things, a television crew appeared. From a national network, no less. I assumed that they were there for the ministerial photo opportunity, and tried to gently squeeze myself into the picture. But I quickly withdrew again when I found that the handsome smooth-talking reporter, and his tough-looking, predatory cameraman, were in an ugly investigative mood.

Finally there were some rather pretty dancing girls, one of whom behaved quite wantonly. While ogling her intently but surreptitiously, I suddenly understood! It was all a joke! This was a sort of cabaret group made up from the institute personnel, who actually seemed to have warm feelings for their departing chief. How very quaint, but how very charming, in such a remote and isolated spot.

I tried to pump a moon-faced fellow for more information about this wonderful cabaret group. He said that he did not know anything about it, but he had a strange light in his eyes. I later learned that he was quite influential, in the sense that he was regarded as a sort of barometer for the mood of the institute. I was relieved to see that he looked much happier by then.
