Description: | On the evening of 21 November, the Personeelsvereniging ASTRON & JIVE organized a gathering for former employees, who are still members of the Personeelsvereniging. The occasion was well attended by former and current employees and their partners. The documentary “Treasure Mountain” was shown. This was a journey into time, with the Radio Observatory at ‘De Schattenberg’ as a starting point – formerly the location of the Durchgangslager Westerbork. In 1950, the filmmaker’s mother was temporarily quartered in the barracks there, after having survived two wars in the Dutch Indies. By means of modern media techniques, war images and historical film material from the colonial period appeared as fata morganas in the Dutch landscape. The Westerbork telescopes played a role as metaphorical time machines. Some Westerbork staff also featured in the documentary. The photo shows some of the attendees of the PV-evening, watching a demonstration of a steam engine by former ASTRON employee Bertus van der Toorn during the film break. |
