Description: | It was not easy to persuade the few foreigners in the otherwise empty Dwingeloo observatory to venture out onto the ice of the nearby Davidsplassen. But once there, they marveled at the unique experience of walking on water for the first time in their life. Of course we regaled them with stories of the dangers of thin ice, and of the unique instinct that Dutchmen have developed to recognize the weak spots. One of us went as far as to sacrifice himself for a live demonstration of what happens if one does not heed the signs, as the bottom-left picture shows. The bottom-right picture gives an impression of the extraordinary quality of this year's ice. Let us enjoy it to the full. |
