Tribute to Peter Nijkamp

| Description: | On the 11th of December 2008, NWO paid tribute to the outgoing chairman of the NWO General Board (Alg. Bestuur) - Prof. dr. Peter Nijkamp. To celebrate his many contributions over the last 7 years, a special farewell symposium was held in the impressive surroundings of the Nieuwe Kerk in Den Haag. The symposium was attended by several hundred participants, including representatives from OCW & EZ etc, and of course NWO. During the meeting, it was announced that the Queen had bestowed upon Peter the title of "Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion" in recognition of his achievements for Dutch science and society. The chairman of NWO was surprised but delighted by the honour, and clearly enjoyed the day's events. But true to character, Peter seemed even happier with the simultaneous announcement by Renk Roborgh (OCW and a recent visitor to ASTRON) that the value of the prestigious Spinoza Prize had been increased to 2.5 MEuro. Other highlights of the day included a National Nijkamp Quiz, a video documentary spoof, and last but not least, an especially rousing performance of the NWO choir, that counted amongst its members many distinguished members of the NWO family. Peter Nijkamp has played a crucial role in supporting the changes and various developments that have taken place within ASTRON over the last few years. He is ranked within the top 1% of economists in Europe, and on the 1st of January he was appointed as the first "universiteitshoogleraar" of the VU Amsterdam. We wish him all the best in this new and especially priviliged position within the Dutch university system. |
