Wildlife on the LOFAR Core

Submitter: Henri Meulman
Description: I wonder whether these roe deer speculate on what is going on. Big heavy machinery is performing an extreme makeover of their habitat. It seems that this couple isn’t bothered at all. Calmly they stroll across the central core of LOFAR where, as soon as the weather condescends to cooperate a little, thousands of antennas will spring up to study galaxies, pulsars and all the other amazing things in the Universe.

Do these animals realize? Coolly they graze the scanty grass, and find a little shelter behind the sand dunes (terps) that will keep the antennas dry. They inspect the banks of the little lakes in which they can wash and drink and cavort.

Their habitat is changing, but for once it is not for the worse. Judging by the animals already in the area, it seems likely that lots of them will find a quiet and plentiful home as soon the LOFAR Nature Area has settled down. From then on, they will only be disturbed by the whispering of the stars.
