92nd meeting of the ASTRON board

Submitter: Michael Garrett
Description: Today the ASTRON board meets for the 92nd time in the history of our foundation. The first meeting was 60 years ago, on the 26 October 1948 (see http://www.astron.nl/dailyimage/main.php?date=20081028). With the recent appointment of our previous chairman, Prof. Jos Engelen, as chairman of the NWO General board, we welcome our new chairman to ASTRON today - Prof. Henk Zijm. Henk is currently professor in Production and Operations Management at the University of Twente. He has held several senior management positions, including Scientific Director of the Center for Telematics and Information Technology, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Vice Chancellor (Rector Magnificus) of the University of Twente. In addition, he worked for Philips Electronics in Eindhoven for eight years as an internal senior consultant in Production and Logistics Management, where he conducted numerous projects on the design, planning and control of manufacturing and logistic systems. He has been involved in many different projects with a large number of commercial companies, both in the Netherlands and abroad, primarily in the field of manufacturing and logistics management. Dr. Zijm holds an M.Sc from the University of Amsterdam and a Ph.D. from the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Today, we also welcome one additional new board member, Prof. Jeff de Hosson, professor of applied physics at the University of Groningen. Together with Sipke Swierstra (currently also chairman of the LOFAR Raad van Toezicht) and Johan Bleeker (formerly general director of SRON), these gentlemen compose the ASTRON board.

The image above shows Henk on a visit to ASTRON earlier this year, where he enjoyed a whirlwind tour of our facilties, including the Radio Observatory LOFAR & WSRT control room.
