ASTRON builds one of UK SKADS arrays

| Description: | The UK SKADS team works on the realization of the 2-PAD system: the dual polarized all digital array. A test antenna array for the 300-1000MHz mid-SKA band with a center of 128 antennas which will al be digitized and processed. Together with passive elements the array will be approximately 3 by 3 meters. Three different antenna concepts have been selected (and by now realized) for 2-PAD. One of these is based on the ASTRON developed polyester foil Vivaldy approach (see also AJDI 12-12-'07 and 29-5-'08), a potentially very cost effective differential antenna. Long strips of foil have been pre-assembled and together with some cubic meters of EPS shipped to Manchester. This week Raymond van de Brink and Sjouke Kuindersma together with the local team are assembling this 2-PAD array at the Jodrell Bank Observatory. |
