Submitter: | Marijke Haverkorn |
Description: | Leiden Observatory, in close collaboration with ASTRON, invites applications for a graduate student position in observational radio astronomy. The PhD student will work on Galactic interstellar medium and magnetic field studies with Marijke Haverkorn (Leiden/ASTRON), in collaboration with Peter Katgert (Leiden) and Ger de Bruyn (ASTRON/Kapteyn). He or she will make frequent visits to ASTRON to collaborate with astronomers and engineers here. The PhD research will entail observational studies of the Galactic magnetic field and its interaction with the interstellar medium, using e.g. Westerbork and LOFAR. The student is expected to play an active role in commissioning of LOFAR, and to gain in-depth knowledge of the workings of LOFAR in order to attain the science goals of the project. He or she will be part of the international LOFAR Magnetism community, and will interact closely with its members throughout Europe. Here is a detailed description of the position, while more information about the astronomy PhD program at Leiden University can be found here. |
