Five Dutch LOFAR stations online

Submitter: Andre Gunst
Description: LOFAR's fifth Dutch station was brought online Friday 14 August 2009. Building LOFAR stations, and bringing them online is done by a multidisciplinary team. The various tasks range from purchasing the ground and arranging the permissions, levelling the ground, laying down the electrical and fibre infrastructure, laying out the markers for the antennas, digging the trenches for the humongous number of cables (192 for the Low Band Antennas and 96 for the High Band Antennas), installing and connecting those cables, placing the station electronics cabinet, and connecting the cabinet via the street cabinet and concentrator node to the CEntral Processing (CEP) facility, where the data are combined, stored and processed further.

Of course, the coordination, planning, validation and software development also need to be in place to make this all happen. Most of the antennas and the contents of a station cabinet are designed and developed by ASTRON engineers and others. All the electronic components are produced, tested and integrated by third parties, making the coordination even more challengeing.

The LOFAR project has many unsung heroes.
