LOFAR LBA image of the 3C196 field

Submitter: George Heald on behalf of the Imaging Busy Week I Team
Description: The first LOFAR Imaging Busy Week (see also AJDI 28-Aug-2009) had the primary goal of testing the individual components of the Imaging Pipeline. Ultimately, this pipeline will produce fully calibrated images in an automated way. During these early days of commissioning the telescope, we are still learning how each of the pipeline components functions individually.

Today's image is truly a group effort! Nearly all of the busy week participants played a role in some stage of the data processing required to make the image. This 5-station image is the average of data from 17 subbands in the low band. BBS has been used to calculate station gains and subtract out the central source, 3C196. The image reveals a multitude of other sources in the field. The "BDSM" software was used to characterize these sources and compare with catalogued positions. In this way it became clear that the image is systematically rotated by a small angle. The bug in the processing pipeline responsible for this artifact has been identified and corrected.

Other artifacts are also apparent - in future Imaging Busy Weeks, we will continue to make even better LOFAR images!
