LOFAR superterp, as it will Never Be Seen again

Submitter: Peter Bennema
Description: The LOFAR Superterp, as it will Never Be Seen Again.

Contractor Oosterhuis has nearly finished his job on the 300m Central Core of LOFAR. During the last 15 months, with unflagging spirit, dedication and craftsmanship, he dealt with the elements Earth, Air and Water, and sometimes with the incomprehensible Fire from the LOFAR roll-out team.

The last months of 2008 were extremely wet, so it was almost impossible to transport the soil needed for the "terpen" on which the LOFAR stations will be built. The year 2009 brought new challenges: the birds, which took their time to lay eggs and bring up their offspring.

Fortunately, during the last few months the working conditions were optimal. The contractor cancelled the holiday plans of himself and his workers, and finished the job a month ahead of schedule. Well, let's be honest: this schedule replaced a former one, which didn't foresee the extreme weather conditions.

The picture shows the superterp as we will never see it again. The circles are the flattened antenna fields. After the antennas are placed, the grass will cover the superterp and the drawingboard circles will vanish.
