Visitors from Papenburg

Submitter: Jean-Mathias Griessmeier
Description: ASTRON and the Dwingeloo telescope continue to attract international attention. On a nice Saturday afternoon (2009-07-18), a group of German amateur astronomers decided to travel to a certain remote place in the north of the Netherlands and learn more about radio astronomy, ASTRON, CAMRAS and the Dwingeloo telescope. Some of the differences between optical and radio astronomy were brought up, e.g. the fact that one can see through the dish of a radio telescope! Things would be different, of course, if our eyes were detecting radio waves rather than optical light, but this would certainly have other disadvantages.
