LOFAR fringes on long baselines

Submitter: Olaf Wucknitz
Description: First fringes on international LOFAR baselines have been found a couple of weeks ago, see the press releases of MPIfR in Bonn and ASTRON.
This is a great success that was made possible by the efforts of the whole LOFAR team.

Todays daily movie shows multi-band delay/rate spectra for about 1.5 hours of the observation of 20th August. The target is 3C196. The vertical axis shows the delay between the signal's arrival at the stations RS106 and Effelsberg (DE601), the horizontal axis is the rate with which the delay (and the phases) change with time. Ideally, we would see a bright peak near 0/0. In reality, this peak moves around as result of ionospheric effects.

Watch this space for further updates on the analysis of these data and later re-observations.

O.W. on behalf of the Long Baselines working group (Anderson, Conway, Jackson and others), the observers (Heald, de Bryun and McKean) and the Effelsberg station team (Anderson, Reich and others).
